How to choose a salon
Check for a state license
Hairstylists, barbers, nail techs and estheticians are licensed by a state board in nearly every state, and many states require the license to be displayed at the station or front desk. You can usually look one up on your state cosmetology or barbering board website. Tattoo shops are typically licensed by the state or local health department.
Look at how tools are cleaned
Metal tools like clippers, nippers and tattoo equipment should be cleaned and disinfected or sterilized between clients, and single-use items like nail files and needles should be new for you. Pedicure tubs should be cleaned after every customer or use a fresh liner. If the station looks dirty or tools come out of a drawer unwrapped, it is fine to leave.
Look at real recent work
Ask to see photos of the stylist's or artist's own work, especially for color, extensions or tattoos. A portfolio that matches the style you want matters more than a fancy storefront. Tattoo artists should be happy to show healed work, not just fresh photos.
Ask about consultations and patch tests
For big changes like hair color, lash extensions or a tattoo, a short consultation helps you agree on the result and the price before anything starts. Careful salons often suggest a patch test before hair dye or lash adhesive, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies. Be cautious of anyone who brushes off your questions about skin reactions.
Get the full price up front
Ask what the quoted price includes, since toner, extra hair length, nail art, removal of old product or a tattoo touch-up can add to the bill. Find out the deposit and cancellation policy before you book. A clear price list or written quote avoids surprises at checkout.
What it typically costs
These are typical US price ranges, and prices in your city and at individual shops can be higher or lower.
Hair length, the stylist's experience and the salon's location all affect the price.
A beard trim, hot towel shave or detailed fade usually adds to the cost.
Nail art, extensions and removing old gel add to the price.
Volume sets take longer and cost more than classic sets, and fills are priced separately.
Common questions
How much should I tip at a salon or barbershop?
Tipping 15 to 20 percent of the service price is the common custom in the US. Many people also tip the assistant who shampoos or helps with color. If you are unhappy with the result, it is better to tell the stylist so they have a chance to fix it.
How can I tell if a nail salon is clean?
Look for a tidy workspace, fresh files and buffers opened in front of you, and metal tools that come out of a sterilizer pouch or disinfectant. Pedicure tubs should be cleaned between every client or fitted with a new liner. Strong chemical smells can mean poor ventilation, and you can always ask to see the salon's state license.
How long do lash extensions last?
Lash extensions typically last a few weeks, because they fall out along with your natural lashes as they shed. Most people book a fill every two to four weeks to keep them looking full. Oil-based makeup removers and rubbing your eyes can shorten how long they last.
How much does a small tattoo cost in your area?
A small, simple tattoo often costs somewhere around $50 to $250, though prices in your area depend on the shop and the artist. Many shops have a minimum charge that covers setup and sterile supplies, even for a tiny design. Larger or more detailed pieces are usually priced by the hour or by the session.
Why do salons ask for a patch test?
A patch test checks whether your skin reacts to a product, such as hair dye or lash adhesive, before it goes on your scalp or near your eyes. A small amount is applied to your skin, often behind the ear or on the inner arm, and checked over the next day or two. If you have reacted to dye or adhesive before, tell the salon before you book.
How old do you have to be to get a tattoo?
In most states you must be 18 to get a tattoo on your own. Some states allow minors to be tattooed with a parent's written consent, and others do not allow it at all. Expect any licensed shop to ask for a valid photo ID.
